Engineering Project Manager (EPC) (all genders)

The main responsibility is the management of the collaboration project between phelas’ engineering team as technology developer and external service providers and EPC contractor(s) to design and subsequently build a Liquid Air Energy Storage System (LAES) at industrial scale.

What will you do?

As a key member of our team, you will:

Prepare the ground for successful collaboration project with external partners:

  • Develop a comprehensive project plan outlining key milestones, deliverables, and timelines for basic and detail engineering phases, plan ahead future procurement and construction phases, and coordinate with potential EPC contractors and additional service providers (e.g. PMCs).
  • Lead the Statement of Work (SoW) preparation in close collaboration with phelas’ engineering team.
  • Participate in the selection of the EPC contractor(s) and service providers, and co-lead the contract negotiations together with phelas’ Head of Operations and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure in close collaboration with phelas’ engineering team that pre-required milestones for start of external EPC contractor work are met.
  • Define and set up internal workflows and processes to enable seamless collaboration and data exchange with EPC contractor(s) and suppliers.

During engineering execution, maintain overall ownership to meet project milestones and objectives:

  • Act as the primary point of contact between phelas, the selected EPC contractor(s) and additional service providers.
  • Oversee the entire scope of the project, safeguard risks, ensure the quality with respect to required standards and specifications, manage the timeline and progress, as well as budget & cost control in close interaction with selected EPC contractor(s), service providers and suppliers.
  • Track phelas’ internal work-flows and tasks to ensure that technical inputs and reviews required for the work of EPC contractor(s) and equipment suppliers are provided on time.
  • Facilitate regular meetings and progress reporting, keeping stakeholders informed and aligned about project status, challenges, and solution pathways.
  • Support project and contract change management processes to ensure the project scope of work, schedule and budgets are clearly defined, up-to-date and mutually agreed between all stakeholders.
    Foster a collaborative and communicative environment to promote effective teamwork.

Identify the requirements and opportunities w.r.t. subsequent procurement and construction phases:

  • Identify critical paths for procurement and construction activities.
  • Define early work packages for procurement of e.g. long-lead items and/or construction planning and/or (pre-)permitting activities to enable fast kick-off and seamless execution of later project phases.
  • Prepare scope of work and overall project setup for subsequent procurement and construction phases.
  • Align with EPC contractor(s) and other external partners about execution model and contractual framework for subsequent procurement and construction phases.

Who are you?

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, management, or relevant fields to project management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with appropriate judgment and quick decision-making.
  • Proficient with project documentation, negotiation, and cost-benefit analysis.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Familiarity with contract management and legal aspects of project execution.
  • Alertness and responsiveness to any information indicating a change in stakeholder expectations and manage conflicting demands and priorities.
  • Ability to work in the fast-paced, demanding work environment of startups where there could be ambiguities.
  • Understanding of energy storage technologies, and knowledge of process engineering systems and equipments is highly desirable.
  • Most preferably, relevant work experience as project manager for an EPC contractor, a PMC service provider or an operating company during execution of industrial process plants or energy infrastructure projects.

  • Language Skills: english is mandatory, german language proficiency is a plus
